Posen, sold lot by lot to Polish Chicagoans in 1893
1893
Posen, Illinois
A Chicago real estate agent put 75 Polish speaking salesmen to work in 1893 and they sold roughly 12,000 lots here to their countrymen inside a year. The village took the German name for Poznan, the city many of the buyers had come from. The archdiocese opened a mission in 1894 that became St. Stanislaus the Martyr parish in 1898, and Posen stayed almost entirely Polish for decades afterward.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
