Elkridge Furnace smelts iron for the Revolution
1775
Elkridge, Maryland
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Caleb Dorsey, a tobacco planter, set up an iron furnace here in the mid 1700s beside ore beds, woodland for charcoal and a river running down to the Chesapeake. Britain had pushed colonial iron production after a Swedish trade embargo cut its supply in 1717, and the works ran on enslaved, indentured and convict labour, peaking during the Revolution. The Dorseys sold to the Ellicotts in 1822, and a flood and fire shut the furnace for good in 1873.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
