DeMatha ends Lew Alcindor's 71-game high school win streak
1965
Hyattsville, Maryland
On January 30, 1965, this Hyattsville boys' school took on Power Memorial of New York and its 7-foot-1 center Lew Alcindor, later Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, before a packed crowd at Cole Field House. Power Memorial had won 71 straight. DeMatha's 33-year-old coach Morgan Wootten built the night around smothering Alcindor, who got off only 14 shots, and the Stags won 46-43. The upset made DeMatha a national basketball name, and Wootten stayed on to win more than 1,200 games there.
