Cypress Hills Houses, where a library branch first opened inside a housing project

Carson and Lundin laid out eleven seven storey buildings between Sutter Avenue and Linden Boulevard, finished in May 1955. That September the Brooklyn Public Library opened a reading room on the ground floor, the first branch the system had ever put inside a public housing development. Most of its early borrowers lived in the buildings above it, and it stayed there until a replacement branch went up across Sutter Avenue in 1995.
