Coventry Village turns from kosher butchers to head shops

Shops filled in along Coventry Road from 1919, around a streetcar transfer point, and from the 1920s to the 1950s the street was solidly Jewish: bakeries, delicatessens, kosher meat markets and tailors. By 1967, with University Circle redevelopment pushing Cleveland's counterculture out and Jewish families moving further east, record stores and head shops had taken the storefronts. Locals started calling it Cleveland's Haight-Ashbury, and it stayed a music and bohemian district for three decades.
