Havana on the Hudson: Union City becomes Cuban America's second city
1959
Union City, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Cubans had been arriving since the 1950s, and after the revolution of 1959 tens of thousands more settled here for cheap flats and factory work. By the 1970s no place in the United States except Miami held more of them. Bergenline Avenue, the longest commercial avenue in New Jersey, filled with Cuban bakeries, restaurants and storefront businesses, and the procession for the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre still walks it every year.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
