Collins Bridge, the wooden toll bridge that made Miami Beach

Before this bridge, the only way onto the barrier island was by boat. John Collins, a 75-year-old farmer with land on the sandbar, ran out of money halfway across the bay in 1911, and the Indianapolis auto parts millionaire Carl Fisher lent him $50,000 in exchange for 200 acres of beach. The 2.5-mile wooden toll bridge opened on June 12, 1913, then the longest wooden bridge in the world. Fisher used his land to start selling Miami Beach, and the city was incorporated two years later.
