Carl Fisher built a proving ground for the local car industry, then paved it with 3.2 million bricks after the crushed-stone surface killed drivers and spectators in 1909. Ray Harroun won the first 500 using a rear-view mirror instead of a riding mechanic. It is the largest sports venue in the world by capacity.
