Chromium under Garfield, from one tank in 1983
1983
Clark Street area, Garfield, New Jersey
A tank at E. C. Electroplating failed in 1983 and put chromic acid into the ground under the plant. The hexavalent chromium moved with the groundwater beneath the surrounding blocks and kept surfacing in basements for years afterward. The EPA put the site on the Superfund list in 2011, decades after the spill, and the cleanup was still running in 2022.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
