The Elmhurst gas tanks

Two gas holders two hundred feet tall stood over the Long Island Expressway from the 1910s, and for decades New York radio measured the morning backup by them: expect fifteen minutes at the Elmhurst gas tanks. The tanks came down starting in 1996 and were gone by 2001. The six acres reopened as Elmhurst Park in 2011, and drivers still use the name for a stretch of road with nothing standing on it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
