Ruston incorporated around the copper smelter on the point and lived off it for most of a century. The 1917 stack rose 571 feet, the tallest in the world at the time, built from two and a half million bricks, and it spread lead and arsenic across a plume that still governs soil rules over a wide stretch of western Washington. The site went on the Superfund list in 1983, and about a hundred thousand people came to watch the stack come down in eight seconds on 17 January 1993.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
