USS Lead, the East Chicago superfund site that emptied a housing project
2016
East Chicago, Indiana
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Three lead and arsenic smelters worked this ground for most of the twentieth century, and the West Calumet public housing complex was later built on top of what they left behind. Soil testing in 2016 found lead as high as 91,000 parts per million against a federal action level of 400. About a thousand residents, most of them Black and Latino, were moved out and the complex was demolished. Cleanup of the surrounding blocks is still running.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
