Central Square, Weymouth, and the shoe trade before the factory

Before shoemaking moved into factories, Weymouth ran on central shops that cut the leather and put the stitching out to be finished in houses and in ten foot square backyard sheds. Most of the homes around this crossing of Middle and Broad Streets went up between 1850 and 1870 for the people doing that work, and one of the small shops still stands at the main corner. In the nineteenth century trade, Weymouth Grade was shorthand for a well made shoe.
