Spicket Falls, the water that ran Methuen

Small works had used the falls of the Spicket River since the 1700s, but the town centre only took shape when the Methuen Cotton Mills went up in the 1820s. The oldest brick buildings still standing around Gaunt Square date from 1825 and 1826. Hat and shoe factories filled in along the river, and the commercial heart of Methuen settled here and stayed.
