Henry Street and the Gainsboro nights

Two blocks called the Yard held the Black business district of a segregated railroad city, and every touring act that could not sleep downtown slept at the Dumas Hotel and played the Strand: Ellington, Basie, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong. Urban renewal and a new expressway took most of it in the 1960s and 70s, which is the usual ending. The Dumas still stands, and the Harrison School around the corner is now the region's Black history museum.
