Dunbar Hospital, opened because no Detroit hospital would admit Black patients

Thirty Black physicians organized as the Allied Medical Society in 1918 and bought the Warren house on Frederick Street, built in 1892 for a real estate developer. They opened it as Dunbar Hospital with 27 beds, an operating room and a nursing school attached, because no other hospital in the city would take Black patients. It was named for the poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, who had died twelve years earlier. The house is now the headquarters of the Detroit Medical Society.
