Oyster Point, a park and marina sitting on top of a bay landfill
1957
South San Francisco, California

The point was tidal marsh and oyster beds until South San Francisco leased about 57 acres of it to a scavenger company in 1956. Dumping began the following year and pushed the shoreline some 1,500 feet out into San Francisco Bay before it stopped in 1970. The marina and its 33 acres of park sit on that unlined fill. California set up the Bay Conservation and Development Commission in 1965 and made it permanent in 1969, which is why nobody has been able to extend a shoreline by a quarter mile since.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
