Camp Gordon Johnston trains for the landings
1942
Lanark Village, Florida
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A quarter of a million men learned amphibious assault on these beaches, wading ashore at Carrabelle and Dog Island for Normandy and the Pacific. The camp was built on sand flats full of mosquitoes and snakes, and a war correspondent called it the most miserable posting in America. Most of the men who trained here went into the first waves.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
