Andrew Craigie donated the land and Charles Bulfinch drew the plans, both moves in Craigie's scheme to turn East Cambridge marsh into lots worth buying. The courthouse went up between 1814 and 1816. In 1848 Ammi B. Young enlarged it and refaced the whole thing in brick, sealing Bulfinch's stuccoed original inside a building only one surviving sketch records.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
