Texas Industries broke ground on a cement plant in the limestone here in 1959 and expanded hard to supply the concrete that Dallas Fort Worth Airport swallowed in the late 1960s. Two more cement makers followed, and a town of a few thousand ended up with three plants and a nickname it still uses. Chaparral Steel opened a mill alongside them in 1975, now the largest Gerdau plant in North America at about 1.8 million tons of steel a year.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
