Buckingham incorporated in the 1950s as a semi-rural pocket of 159 acres completely surrounded by Richardson. Speculators began buying up the homes of its sixty-four families in 1983 to redevelop the land, and the residents voted to allow alcohol sales to make the site more attractive to buyers. The real estate market then collapsed, the development company went bankrupt, and the town of 102 people was eventually absorbed into Richardson.
