Oakland Tech opened on 5 January 1914 with the academic wing on one side and bookkeeping and stenography on the other, and separate buildings out back for machining, forging, foundry work, carpentry, plumbing and metalwork. J. J. Donovan designed the columned main block after MIT. When the school was rebuilt in the 1970s the building was judged too historic to knock down, so it was gutted and reconstructed behind its own facade, and it was landmarked in 1985.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
