Black Creek becomes the army's road into the Seminole War

Black Creek empties into the St Johns here and stayed deep enough for steamboats a long way inland. In 1836 the army built Fort Heileman at the forks about ten miles upstream, at the landing that later became Middleburg, and ran it as the main supply depot for the east side of the Second Seminole War. The same channel carried out cotton, timber and turpentine for decades after the soldiers left.
