On March 1, 1864 the 40th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry struck a small Confederate outpost on McGirt's Creek west of Jacksonville. Twenty nine men were killed or wounded in a fight also recorded as Camp Mooney. It was the last engagement of the Olustee campaign, which had opened three weeks earlier with a Union column overrunning Camp Finegan a few miles east of here and had already produced the largest battle fought in Florida.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
