The Dade Pyramids and 1,400 Seminole War dead
1842
St. Augustine, Florida
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
When the Second Seminole War ended the Army collected its dead from across the territory into vaults on this post cemetery, more than 1,400 of them, including the men killed with Major Francis Dade near Bushnell in December 1835. Soldiers at the garrison each gave a day's pay to pay for a marker. Three coquina pyramids five feet high were dedicated over the vaults on 15 August 1842 and still stand in what is now a national cemetery.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
