Berkeley incorporates to keep its schools white
1937
Berkeley, Missouri
White residents in the north of the Kinloch school district objected to sharing a new high school with their Black neighbors, so they drew a city around their own households and split the district in two. Berkeley and Kinloch kept separate schools long after Brown v. Board, arguing that two districts were not segregation. The Justice Department ended the arrangement in 1971 and the districts were folded into Ferguson-Florissant in 1975.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
