Nieuw Amersfoort, one of the six original towns of Kings County
1661
Flatlands, Brooklyn, New York
Dutch farmers settled the flat ground east of Flatbush in the 1630s and named it Nieuw Amersfoort after a town in the Netherlands. Peter Stuyvesant granted the settlement local rule in 1661, making it one of the six towns that became Kings County. It stayed farms and market gardens long after the rest of Brooklyn filled in, and did not join the City of Brooklyn until 1896.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
