Beaver is laid out in 1792 with eight public squares

Pennsylvania reserved this ground at the mouth of the Beaver River for a state town rather than selling it off to speculators, and surveyor Daniel Leet ran the grid in November 1792. His plan set aside eight public spaces, four grouped in the middle of town and the rest at the corners, which is why a county seat of four thousand people still has more parkland in its centre than most cities twenty times the size. The legislature confirmed the survey in March 1793 and Beaver has been the county seat ever since.
