Bayley Seton Hospital, built for sailors
1831
Stapleton, Staten Island
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Seamen's Retreat opened here in 1831 to treat merchant sailors coming off ships in the harbour, and the site ran as a United States Marine Hospital for a century after that. The federal government put up the large complex that still stands in the 1930s. It went private in 1981 and closed as a hospital in 2004.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
