Detroit opened this hospital in 1911 to isolate and treat the infectious diseases tearing through a city whose population was doubling: tuberculosis, diphtheria, scarlet fever, measles and mumps. It was named for Herman Kiefer, a local physician known for treating patients who could not pay. The city ran it for over a century and closed it in 2013.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
