Detroit builds the world's largest trash incinerator, and spends thirty years getting rid of it
1989

When it fired up in 1989 this was the largest waste to energy incinerator on Earth, sited where the freeways meet on the near east side. Neighbours fought it before it opened and kept fighting after, over asthma rates and a smell that made yards unusable, while the city carried more than a billion dollars of debt for it. The owners shut it in 2019 saying it was too old to run. Demolition finished in 2023.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
