Barnegat Lighthouse

Long Beach Island, New Jersey

Old Barney, the red-and-white tower at the north tip of Long Beach Island, marked one of the most dangerous inlets on the coast, a shifting bar where the shipping lane bent close to shore and hundreds of vessels came apart. It was designed by the same engineer who went on to run the Union defence of Washington. You can still climb the two hundred and seventeen steps.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
