Absecon Lighthouse
1857
Atlantic City, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The tallest lighthouse in New Jersey stands in the middle of the city now, hemmed in by streets, built after a run of wrecks on the Absecon shoals killed hundreds of immigrants within sight of land. Its first-order Fresnel lens is the original. The city grew up around it and out past it, and the light that once stood alone on the dunes looks down on the back of the boardwalk.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
