The Colgate Clock, once the largest clock in the world

Colgate ran a soap and toothpaste works on the Jersey City waterfront and in 1924 put a fifty foot clock face on the roof of it, octagonal because that was the shape of its Octagon laundry soap. The minute hand is nearly twenty six feet long. Mayor Frank Hague started it at noon on 1 December 1924, and when the plant came down in 1985 the clock was kept, moved to the water's edge and left facing Manhattan.
