Linoleumville votes to become Travis
1930
Travis, Staten Island
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
The American Linoleum Manufacturing Company set up on this stretch of the Arthur Kill in 1872 and the owner renamed the village after the floor covering it made. The factory closed in 1928. Two years later the residents held a vote on a new name, and Travis beat Linoleumville by more than three hundred to four.
