Aurora buys itself a college, on condition every roof is red
1911
Aurora, Illinois
The school started in 1893 as an Advent Christian seminary at Mendota, 50 miles down the line, and broadened into a liberal arts college within a few years. In 1911 Aurora residents raised the money to build it a new campus, led by Charles Eckhart, whose firm became the Auburn Automobile Company, and the college moved. Eckhart attached a condition to his gift: every building the school put up would wear a red tile roof. They still do. It cut ties with the church in 1971.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
