Mesa buys itself a college town, and most of the colleges leave
2013
Mesa, Arizona
Mesa had no four-year college downtown, so the city went shopping for some. Under an economic development push it called HEAT, it recruited five small private schools from other states and helped pay for their space, and Wilkes University of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania opened its Mesa campus in 2013 aimed at first-generation students. Albright and Westminster later pulled out, and Wilkes stopped teaching in person in Mesa in 2017. Benedictine and Upper Iowa stayed.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
