Dean Kamen's DEKA lab in the old Manchester mills built the self-balancing scooter code-named Ginger, and for a year before the 2001 reveal the tech world speculated it might be a hoverboard, a teleporter, cold fusion. It was a scooter. Cities were not, in fact, redesigned around it, but the machine that was supposed to change the world settled into a long career of mall cops and tour groups, and the lab that built it keeps turning out prosthetic arms and insulin pumps that actually did.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
