Amelia Island's north range lights, moved to chase the channel

Two beacons went up on the north end of the island in 1858, set so that a ship seeing one light stacked above the other was lined up with the channel across the bar. Confederate crews pulled the lenses out early in the war, and Union forces took the station along with Fernandina and Fort Clinch in 1862. The bar kept shifting, so the front light was moved again and again, and in 1887 the rear light was put on a tramway so it could be shifted too. Buoys eventually did the job better and the lights were switched off in 1899.
