The Craighill Channel range lights straightened the way into Baltimore harbor

Congress paid to dig a deeper channel into Baltimore in 1870 and named it for William Craighill, the engineer who surveyed the cut. A ship lines the channel up by steering until two lights, one low and near, one high and far, stack into a single vertical line. This 64 foot iron skeleton tower is the rear light of the upper pair, funded in 1885 and first lit in 1886 on the east side of Sparrows Point.
