Nitro, the town built for gunpowder
1918
Nitro, Kanawha County, West Virginia

The government put up an entire city in eleven months in 1918, houses and streets and all, to staff a smokeless powder plant, and named it after what it was for. The armistice came weeks after production started and the whole thing was sold off at auction. The town stayed, still laid out on the wartime grid, still called Nitro.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
