A U-boat shells the tanker Gulfamerica in front of the beach crowd
1942
Off Jacksonville Beach, Florida
The tanker was three weeks old and on her first voyage when U-123 put a torpedo into her starboard side on the night of 10 April 1942. The submarine then moved between the ship and the shore and finished her with its deck gun, in full view of people who had come out of the Jacksonville Beach dance halls and hotels to watch. Nineteen men aboard were killed. Shore lights had been silhouetting ships for the submarines, and dimout orders reached the Florida coast within weeks.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
