A Japanese submarine surfaced offshore one night in June and put seventeen shells at the fort, the only mainland American military installation shelled by an enemy since 1812. The battery commander refused to return fire on the grounds that his guns could not reach and firing would only give away his position. He was right, and nothing was hit but a baseball backstop.
