1954
Groton, Connecticut
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The first nuclear-powered vessel of any kind, launched at Groton and signalling underway on nuclear power. She reached the North Pole under the ice in 1958, and submarines stopped being boats that submerged briefly and became boats that stayed down.
