Concrete observation towers went up along the Delaware coast to spot German submarines and range the guns guarding the mouth of the bay, which was the way into Philadelphia's shipyards and refineries. Eleven towers still stand in the dunes, and the surrendered U-858 was brought in here in May 1945.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
