Point Defiance Zoo strings 1.5 million lights through its grounds each winter for one of Tacoma's longest running holiday traditions. The display runs nightly from the day after Thanksgiving into the first week of January.

The zoo opened in 1905 on the bluff inside Point Defiance Park.
Ruston incorporated around the copper smelter on the point and lived off it for most of a century.
Logging engineers built a working replica of a steam era timber camp on fourteen forested acres inside Point Defiance Park in 1964, complete with bunk cars, a spar tree and a railroad running between the sites.
The Wilkes expedition named the headland for the judgment that guns placed here could defy any fleet trying to enter the Narrows.
