The light stands on the Louisiana bank across from the Texas town, carried on eight brick buttresses that spread its weight over soft marsh.
A year before the fight that made Sabine Pass famous, the Union navy shelled the Confederate work below Sabine City on 24 and 25 September 1862 and took the pass.
On 8 September 1863 a Union force of four gunboats, eighteen transports and close to six thousand troops came up the pass to open a road into Texas.
Dowling's victory did not solve the obvious problem, which was that a landing party could come ashore west of the pass and walk in behind the guns.
