The Sabine Pass Lighthouse, lit in 1857 and watched from by both sides
1857
Cameron Parish, Louisiana
The light stands on the Louisiana bank across from the Texas town, carried on eight brick buttresses that spread its weight over soft marsh. Only three of that design were ever built in the country. Both armies used it as a lookout during the Civil War, it rode out the 1886 hurricane that flattened the town opposite, and the Coast Guard switched it off in 1952. It has stood empty since.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
