The First Battle of Sabine Pass tightens the Texas blockade
1862
Sabine Pass, Port Arthur, Texas
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A year before the fight that made Sabine Pass famous, the Union navy shelled the Confederate work below Sabine City on 24 and 25 September 1862 and took the pass. The point was to close the Texas coast to blockade runners and to keep Confederate troops from moving down to reinforce Galveston. The small garrison gave up the fort and withdrew.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
