Dick Dowling's forty seven men break a Union invasion at Sabine Pass

On 8 September 1863 a Union force of four gunboats, eighteen transports and close to six thousand troops came up the pass to open a road into Texas. Lieutenant Richard Dowling had six guns and forty seven men, mostly Irish dockhands from Houston, dug into an earthwork called Fort Griffin. In under an hour they disabled two gunboats, took around three hundred and fifty prisoners and turned the fleet back to New Orleans without a soldier landing. Jefferson Davis called it the most remarkable battle of the war.
